I recently discovered the work of Brighton based artist Maria Rivans who uses vintage and recycled papers to create portraits of “pin ups”. Many inspired by watching Hollywood films as a child.
At the same time I was reading the RA's introduction to the work of Joseph Cornell that they exhibited in London in 2015. His boxes are a wonderful assemblage of his collected materials.
Both artists have inspired me to go through my collage collection once more where I came across many postcards with portraits of my heroines and heroes plus examples of retablos from Mexico and Peru.
It seemed fitting to begin a series of “ex votos” to my Icons / Idols with Frida Kahlo. Framing her with the familiar flora, fauna and artistic and cultural references used in her own portraits and retablos.
